A meeting-debate in the framework of the "In Summer you learn the STEM" took place yesterday with the participation of the students of the "G. Verga" Gela Comprehensive Institute and the FIDAPA BPW Italy on the theme "Women and STEM".
The meeting-debate, held yesterday, was extremely fruitful to talk about STEM on the occasion of the visit of BPW International President, Amany Asfour, and of I.C "Giovanni Verga" of Gela students who have joined the program "In Summer you learn the STEM".
The three Catanese researchers participated in the meeting:
- Dr. Elena Bruno researcher in the field of Physics of Matter at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Catania
- Dr. Sara Pirrone first researcher in the Catania section of INFN active in the field of Nuclear Physics and Chairman of the Equal Opportunities Committee of the Italian Physical Society
- Prof. Alessia Tricomi Professor of Elementary Particle Physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Catania and Director of the CSFNSM
who told our guests about their experience as women and scientists.
The important message that emerged during the meeting, addressed, in particular, to young students present, is that science has no color, no gender, no religion, no region; science and research require only passion and, of course, also study and sacrifice.
And also the friends of Fidapa-BPW, with their participation in this day-debate, wanted to underline the importance of gender equality in STEM.
The morning ended with a visit to the INFN - LNS where our guests were able to visit the control room, the Tandem and the room dedicated to the proton therapy and appreciate the important effects that research has in daily life.
The meeting-debate was organized by the CSFNSM in collaboration with FIDAPA BPW Italy as part of the "In Summer you learn the STEM" program promoted by the Department for Equal Opportunities.
The FIDAPA BPW authorities also intervened in the debate
- Dr. Maria Concetta Oliveri - BPW Italy National Vice President
- Dr. Amany Asfour - President of BPW International
- Dott.ssa Cettina Corallo - President of BPW Italy Distretto Sicilia
- Prof. Giuseppina Seidita - ExecutiveFinance Officer BPWI
A special thanks goes to all our guests, in particular, to the young students who, with their questions, have stimulated the debate, to all the speakers and the LNS Public Engagement colleagues who have made themselves available for the visit of the LNS.
